This is an image of Comet S 4 Linear. This comet was
hopefully going to become a naked eye object in the summer of 2000, but
did not quite make it. As it got closer to the Sun, it broke apart and
not much of it survived. The following few images were taken when it was
around its brightest. It was just visible in binoculars, and the tail could
just be seen in a medium telescope. The exposure for this image was 60
seconds taken on 2000-07-17 at 22:30UT. The image has been processed to
bring out the detail of the tail. |
 |
This image is also S 4 linear and was 30 seconds taken at 22:32UT. |
 |
The next eight images were taken at about one minute
apart. By looking at the first and last images, you can see how fast the
comet was moving. The exposures were 30 seconds at 22:36UT plus a minute
per image. |
